| TTS Bali Project - Dedicated to Educate and Support the most disadvantaged Children of Bali & to Create Educational Projects that incorporate Organic & Sustainable Living. Sponsored by TTS. |
2010 was an eventful year on both a personal and project level. Here we are already into 2011! We'd really like to thank all of you who have supported us to date. From this year, I will be living in Bali! Wahoo! Omid is also zooming along with his Botanical Cuisine workshops and classes. Omid did some awesome fund-raising in 2010 with his Al Fresco Summer Classes in Melbourne, a Botanical Cuisine Potluck and he ran a marathon to raise funds for TTS Bali Project! Omid and I share a common dream of educating and empowering children to a brighter future for themselves and for their families. We both feel that with the continued support of family, and both old and new friends, we can keep moving forward!
TTS Bali Project currently sponsors the educational needs of 8 children. Six of our children are living at Alas Kasih Orphanage in West Bali. We have been supporting Yeyen, one of the children for 6 years, Agus, Dwi, Yanus, and Stephanus have been sponsored for 4 years and we added our newest sponsored girl this past year – Ni Kadek. They range from elementary school to junior high school. Our other 2 sponsored children are through the Helen Flavel Foundation in North Bali. We are in the 5th year of supporting Rudi and Meiling, who are both still in elementary school.
What is educational support? Though education is officially considered “free”in Indonesia, the students have to pay various fees in order to attend. We cover the educational costs, uniforms, and needed books and supplies. Without this support, many children in Bali would not be able to attend school. Too many rural and struggling families opt to send their children not to junior or senior high school, but to the fields to work, instead. This is the core support.
A new project for 2011 and beyond....
If we consider educational sponsorship of children and working with their families and communities as part of a cycle, then a not-so-obvious gap appears in the cycle. Many sponsorship programs terminate when a child finishes high school. Often organizations don't have the facility nor funds to navigate the complexity of post high school training or education. Sponsors are often unable or unwilling to continue sponsorship.
What happens to these kids? True, graduating high school is an achievement, but in developing nations just as in first world nations, job training or higher education has become increasingly important. Bali is no exception and North Bali has a high rate of unemployment. Many students end up at home and/or unemployed.
Some organizations are able to help a select few students to continue. TTS Bali Projects applauds these efforts and we feel this area is where we can invest time, energy and funds. If we can bridge the gap by providing the opportunity for training or higher education, we can continue the pattern of success. The options for these students will increase dramatically and they can better help themselves, their families and hopefully one day, their communities.
TTS Bali Project would like to offer two types of Scholarships to students who would otherwise have no opportunity to study past high school.
I think it is important to explain to people exactly where funds go, how decisions are made, the process of carrying out a project and the final results of a project completed. To that end, we have categorized our major projects. Educational sponsorships and Scholarships for higher education will be our focus. But.... (There always seems to be a “but”!)
Part of our Mission Statement is that we want to respond to the needs of the communities we are working with. Concrete projects which address a need often come our way. Sometimes they can’t be readily defined nor fit into the parameters of existing plans. These projects often come unexpectedly because of an immediate need or because of an opportunity presented. The General Fund is a standing pool of money that can be accessed as need arises.
